The 140th Episode : No exoticism
[June, 1998 Guam]
I arrived in Guam around 3:00 in midnight without having well sleeping in spite of the night flight. The hotel staff informed me in advance to pick up at the airport but nobody was there. I wonder he or she would be outside at like the taxi stops but not. I called the hotel to know they'd forgot. They apologised and asked me to wait as they send somebody to the airport immediately. No way! Don't make me wait at such a midnight!
I was obliged to wait on the bench near the way out of the airport. No others were waiting on such a place. People arrived just now was passing in a stream in front me. They were all Japanese as far as I saw them, not overstating. They seemed to be group tourists, who were moving in a group. As I thought nobody came here alone. They were passing looking at me sitting alone in a pothole on the bench. I turned my head down because I don’t even want to make eye contact, but I felt somebody’s eye on me.
I turned my head up, then I met eyes with one woman. Mmm? I’ve seen her before!? I looked away. After she passed, I turned my head up to see her back. She was looking at me while looking back. Is she still someone I know? I couldn’t remember.
While I was in Guam, I minded her. Ah! She might be… I remembered a woman, who was a friend of my friend’s wife (former wife, now)!? Before they got married we went drinking together a couple of times.
After I came back to Japan, I asked my friend. He said she was the one. She said to have recognised myself clearly, I heard. Then tell me at the time, pleeease! Couldn’t I have been bothered. I never thought I’d see her at such a place.
