The 137th Episode : Finger on the trigger

Government security with a gun (Santiago, Chile)

[June, 1998 Caracas, Venezuela]

The security is not good in South America.  Everybody might have the impression.  That’s correct.  I didn’t feel it so much in Santiago and Buenos Aires, worse than Japan though, but there was much lack of security here in Venezuela, Columbia…  Is it true in hot area?

After work, I was taken to a restaurant with two staff of our distributor.  It looked a little upmarket.  We walked to the restaurant from the car parking.  There was a guardsman looked guy was sitting on a chair at the entrance of the restaurant.  He stood up on our approaching and asked “how many?”.  Three, we answered.  Then he looked at us carefully, if we were dubious guys or not.

We were passed in his inspection.  He said “OK, come in” waving his hand from right to left in front of his stomach.  But he held a pistol tightly in his right hand and besides his index finger was on the trigger.  He was anytime ready to open fire.  I’ve never seen such a sight in Japan.

Where there is money, there is always a target.  They are always living with danger and its risk.  I learnt the life circumstances are quite different from Japan.
