The 182nd Episode : Speeding crackdown
[June, 2009 Accra => Kumasi, Ghana]
We were done with our stomachs and our car engines also came to lives. They restarted to drive for Kumasi. The main roads were well paved and we could drive comfortably. But this guy named YB drives quite fast. Two cars were carrying our party but one was already far behind.
After a while a man in a certain costume was standing with a pistol-like object towards us. Another man was also standing beside him in the same costume. He signalled us to "stop". YB stopped the car on the road shoulder to get off. I couldn't hear their voice from the car but it didn't seem tense and sometimes could see smiles on them.
The men in the costume were policemen and the pistol-like object in his hand was a speed gun which is well used in baseball. They use the gun for speeding crackdown. It was not so big one like that used in Japan, so they could move to several places easily. And drivers can see their appearance clearly when they crackdown. Their behavior was not sneaky and hideously policed like in Japan. They are impartial.
YB didn't appear to have been ticketed nor to have shown his driver's licence. He came back to the car after a while. I didn't know the max. speed there and how fast he was driving. He laughed bitterly at the stern warning. Only warning!? I felt it was faster than cars on Japanese motorway...
