The 112th Episode : Flamenco
[March, 1998 Barcelona, Spain]
The dinner on the first day was taken watching the Flamenco show. To watching the show was the first experience for me. The dance was originated in Andalusia in the south of Spain that has a little far relation with Catalonia in the northeast but it had spread to all over Spain.
It was more powerful than I expected. The powerful stomping on the wooden stage. We had dinner just by the stage… Was that only me who mind the dust?
People’s eyes were on the dancing, so were my eyes first. But the dance is based on the music. My eyes steadily moved to the musicians. The Spanish melody drifting in sorrow by the guitar, the complex finger work how did they play and well-projected voice, everything whelmed me.
The lights in the restaurant were naked electric bulbs being a little dim to create the atmosphere(?) They were hung in a certain distance. That might be OK, but what!?!? The way how to hang them surprised me. It won’t be definitely permitted in Japan. A pair of naked wires were spread near the ceiling and the lights were pinched with those clothes pins-like ones. Tall people could touch the wires. If touched, 220V electricity would ran in the body… Was it alright?
